The Other Line

Her mind was flooded with thoughts.

“Can you call me..” she texted. He asked which number it was, and she gave him her number once more.

Incoming call, and her phone vibrated. She stared at it for a couple seconds and then picked it up.

“Hello?”

“Hi.”

The line went silent for ten seconds. She held her breath. She didn’t even know why she asked him to call her. She guessed it was because she wanted someone to just be there, to listen. That’s so selfish, she thought. She didn’t know how to feel anymore. She just felt empty. A void was gradually growing in her heart and her happiness was being sucked away by it.

“Um,” she said after a few moments of silence.

“Yeah?”

And then she didn’t know what else to say. That’s all she could manage out of her mouth. She couldn’t think. The guys behind her were laughing and joking around with the basketball, but she just stood right in the middle of the room, in the middle of their game, staring at the wall, with the phone pressed up against the side of her head.

Suddenly, she was fully aware of where she was and what was happening and she moved out of the way. She remembered she was still on the phone with him and blatantly stated, “I don’t even know why I asked you to call me.” By this point, she was just saying whatever popped in her head, without thinking.

Then her eyes started to water. Her eyesight blurred and she felt a tear roll down the left side of her face. She couldn’t breathe. She missed him so much and now, when she needed him the most, he wasn’t there. But he’s there on the other line.

Still, that was too far for her. She needed him.
