The alarm blared its insisting wake-up call and she slammed her hand on the snooze button. The snooze option of that digital clock usually lasted for five minutes and she planned to spend those precious five minutes sleeping.
Only, she couldn’t sleep. She just lay there, in a soldier-like position, arms held straight down to her sides. She slowly opened her heavy eyes to let in some of the sunlight seeping through her window. Then she realized it was winter, which meant short days and long nights. She closed her eyes.
A song came wandering into her head.
Crazy girl, don’t you know that I love you.
It was one of her favorite songs because it reminded her of her boyfriend, who would always call her “crazy girl” or “silly girl”. She heard it on the radio one time and it stopped her from —
She cleared her mind from all the negative thoughts. “Negative thoughts are a bad way to start the day,” she remembered from her best friend’s lecture on positiveness.
She thought about all the homework she had to do once she got to school and the tests she had to study for. She thought about facing another drab day with the same old schedule, faces, things to do. She wanted to travel the world, meet new people, spend nights there, do something new.
Her mind shifted to a person — her boyfriend. And she imagined being able to see him again. She missed his hands intertwined with hers, his loving voice, his kind, gentle eyes. She sighed.
The alarm had finished counting the 300 seconds it had been commanded to do and interrupted her thinking with another few loud wake-up calls. Her eyes flew open and grumbling, she clicked the alarm off.
